Why Do We Accept Cryptocurrency Donations?

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Foundation, Inc., recognizes the importance cryptocurrency plays in today’s economy and in the lives of our alumni, parents and friends. Donors may find it beneficial to make contributions of cryptocurrency and should consult their tax adviser regarding how donations of cryptocurrency and other highly appreciated assets may fit into their tax strategy.

Why Donate In Cryptocurrency?

For donors in the United States, the IRS has classified cryptocurrency as a form of property for tax purposes. This means that when you donate Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or University, you may not be required to pay capital gains tax on donated cryptocurrency and you may still be able to claim a deduction for your gift. Please consult your tax adviser for more information.

Our Gift Acceptance Requirements

In accordance with the University’s Gift Acceptance Policy, all contributions of cryptocurrency are converted to cash immediately upon acceptance and cannot be refunded for any reason.

While we are happy to honor requests for anonymity, the Foundation requires that all donors identify themselves when making a charitable contribution.

- HOW DO I DONATE BITCOINS AND OTHER CRYPTOCURRENCY TO CAROLINA?

Donating cryptocurrency is easy. Click the link above, select your cryptocurrency type, complete the information, receive the wallet address, and make your donation.

- HOW DO I DESIGNATE MY GIFT?

Once you complete your gift, click here to tell us how to direct your gift. Your gift can benefit any school, unit, department or affiliated foundation at the University. We will contact you if there are questions or to confirm your intentions.

- I NEED A WALLET ADDRESS TO COMPLETE MY DONATION. WHERE CAN I ACCESS THIS INFORMATION?

You can access all of our wallet addresses by clicking on the link above. Once you enter the type of cryptocurrency and reach the third step, you will receive a unique wallet address which can then be used to complete your donation.

- WILL I GET A RECEIPT WITH MY DONATION?

You will receive a receipt for your donation via email. You must enter your email when prompted in our widget above. At this time, the Foundation does not accept anonymous cryptocurrency donations.

- IS MY CRYPTOCURRENCY DONATION TAX DEDUCTIBLE?

In the US, the IRS classifies cryptocurrencies as property, so cryptocurrency donations to 501(c)(3) charities receive similar treatment as other appreciated assets. Donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, meaning you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it on your taxes. Please contact your tax or financial advisor for more information.

In the UK, your cryptocurrency donations to a charity may be eligible for relief from capital gains tax, with the transfer taking place on a no-gain, no-loss basis. Cryptocurrency donations do not qualify for gift aid. Please contact your tax or financial advisor for more information.
