Below are important year-end deadlines and reminders to receive tax benefits for calendar year 2020 gifts. Of special note, in a move that will save money, the University will close the last week of 2020 (Dec. 24-Dec. 29). To assist our alumni and friends with their year-end giving, University Development will be staffed Dec. 30-31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To ensure that your gift will be processed to meet IRS tax-year deadlines, please see the information below.

Gifts by credit card

The University accepts VISA, MasterCard, Discover and AMEX. You can also donate on your mobile device via ApplePay or MasterPass. You can give in the following ways:


Credit card gifts made online should be completed before midnight Dec. 31 to qualify as tax deductible contributions in 2020. To make your gift online, go to IRS guidelines require that online credit card transactions be completed by 11:59 p.m., Dec. 31 (based on the time zone in which the gift is made), in order for those gifts to count in the calendar year.


To make a gift by phone, call 919-537-3818 before 2 p.m. E.S.T., Dec. 31. Please have your credit card number, expiration date and daytime phone number ready when you call. To ensure the security of your information as well as the timely processing of your gift, please do not leave your credit card information on a voicemail. After 3 p.m., please go online to make your year-end gift at


When mailing a credit card gift, it should be postmarked by no later than Dec. 16 to ensure ample time before year-end. IRS guidelines require that credit cards be charged by Dec. 31 in order to count in the current year. Any potential credit card gift received in the mail after Dec. 31 (even if postmarked by that date) cannot be treated as a 2020 gift.

Please DO NOT mail to a University Campus Box address after Dec. 15 as University Mail Services will be closed the week of Dec. 24 and will not process mail until January 2021.

Gifts by check

If you mail a check, the envelope must be postmarked by Dec. 31 to count as a gift for 2020. Please make your check payable to “UNC-Chapel Hill” and include a note or gift slip indicating how you want your gift designated and mail it to: UNC-Chapel Hill, Office of Gift Services, POB 309, Chapel Hill, NC 27514-0309. You may also hand deliver your check to the Office of University Development at 208 W. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill by 2 p.m. E.S.T. on Dec. 31. Please call us at 919-537-3818 before coming to the office so that we will be expecting you.

Gifts by stock

Gifts by stock can be made into our Wells Fargo Advisors brokerage account by electronic transfer. Shares must be transferred into the account before 4 p.m. E.S.T. on Dec. 31. Please call 919-962-8189 or 919-962-3047 for more information and click here for transfer instructions.

Gifts by cash wire
